100 Years of Printing Excellence: The History of Lindley Print & Design
Lindley Print & Design, fondly known as Lindleys, is celebrating an extraordinary milestone—100 years of providing exceptional printing services in Wakefield. Established in 1924 by John Lindley and his son, Sidney, Lindleys has grown to become a cornerstone of the local community and a trusted name in the printing industry.
From Humble Beginnings to a Wakefield Institution
The Lindley story began in the heart of Wakefield at Thompsons Yard, where John and Sidney Lindley laid the foundations of a family-run business. By the 1930s, the business had relocated to Almshouse Lane, a move that marked the first of many transformations for Lindleys. The Almshouse Lane premises served as a bustling hub for decades until the 1980s when the property was demolished to make way for the Ridings Shopping Centre. Lindleys then moved to its current home at 70 George Street, where it continues to operate today.
A Family Legacy
Lindleys was a family-run business for 80 years. After John Lindley and his son Sidney, the company was passed down to John’s grandson, John Charles Lindley. In 2004, the business entered a new chapter when David Hanson and Anthony Wood became the first non-family owners. Building on the Lindley legacy, they modernised the business while staying true to its founding values.
Adapting to Changing Times
Over the past century, Lindleys has witnessed remarkable changes in the printing industry. Historically known as printers and bookbinders, Lindleys adapted to the digital age, shifting its focus to digital printing in the last two decades. The introduction of digital printing allowed Lindleys to meet the growing demand for high-quality, fast-turnaround services.
In 2009, David and Anthony partnered with a web developer to launch Hippoprint.co.uk, a nationwide next-day printing service. This move enabled Lindleys to expand its reach beyond Wakefield, offering modern solutions to businesses and individuals across the UK.
Preserving History
Despite its evolution, Lindleys has remained deeply connected to its roots. A handcart once used for deliveries in Wakefield is now displayed in the Wakefield Museum. Remarkably, the phone number painted on the cart, 2567, still forms part of the company’s modern telephone number.
Looking Ahead
As Lindleys celebrates its centenary, it reflects on a century of innovation, community service, and resilience. The company continues to offer a wide range of services, including digital printing, litho printing, wide-format printing, and graphic design, catering to both local clients and nationwide customers through Hippoprint.
Lindleys’ commitment to quality, reliability, and customer service remains at the heart of its operations as it looks forward to shaping the next chapter of its remarkable history.
